- The four strokes in a four cycle engine are
- Intake, compression, power, exhaust.
- Engine size
- The reference used to designate the volume displaced by the piston travel in a piston engine.
- Wheel base
- The distance between the centers of the front and rear axles.
- Ignition timing
- The alignment of the distributor shaft and the crankshaft
- Valve timing
- The alignment of the camshaft and the crankshaft.
- Firing order
- The numbered sequence of the distribution of the sparks to their designated cylinders
- Camshaft
- The rotating shaft which functions to open and close the cylinder valves
- Carburetor
- The unit that controls the amount of air and fuel as it enters the intake manifold and also regulates the speed of the engine.
- Alternator
- The unit which supplies the regeneration of the electrical power to the battery and electrical system.
- Voltage regulator
- The unit which determines the amount of electricity for the electrical system and the amount to recharge the battery.
- Distributor
- The unit which directs the electricity to the designated spark plug at the proper time.
- Crankshaft
- The main rotating shaft which harnesses all of the power that the engine creates; it is driven by the connecting rods from each cylinder.
- Connecting rod
- The part in each cylinder which transmits the force from the reciprocal moving piston to the rotating crankshaft.
- Piston
- The cylindrical piece with a solid disc on top that slides back and forth within the cylinder producing the compression and power in a piston engine.
- Wrist pin
- The cylindrical piece which connects a connecting rod and a piston by passing through both sides of a piston and one end of a connecting rod.
